Rachel Reeves has become Britain's first female Chancellor of the Exchequer. The former chess champion takes on one of the country's four great offices of state.
Reeves, who was born in 1979, is a Labour Party politician and economist. She has served as the Member of Parliament for Leeds West since 2010.
In her first speech as Chancellor, Reeves said she was "proud" to be the first woman to hold the post. She said she would "work tirelessly" to "fix the foundations of our economy".
Reeves was educated at New College, Oxford, and the London School of Economics. She worked as an economist for the Bank of England and the International Monetary Fund before entering politics.
Reeves is married to Nick Clegg, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats. They have three children.
