Neil Warnock reveals Gazza 'couldn't walk, shouldn't have been on the pitch'

Neil Warnock believes Paul Gascoigne "should not have been on the pitch" when he was infamously sent off against Sweden at Euro 96.

Gazza famously burst into tears after receiving a second yellow card.

England manager Terry Venables had sent on the midfielder despite knowing he had a back injury.

'Gazza was desperate to play and Terry made the wrong decision,' says Warnock

Warnock, who was Venables' assistant at the time, said: "Gazza was desperate to play and Terry made the wrong decision. He shouldn't have been on the pitch. He couldn't walk."

Warnock also revealed that Gazza had been "drinking heavily" in the build-up to the tournament.

"He was a liability," said Warnock. "He was always turning up late for training and he was always getting into trouble.

Warnock added: "But he was a brilliant player. When he was on his game, he was unplayable.

'Gazza was a one-off,' according to Jones

Vinnie Jones, who played alongside Gazza for England, said: "He was a one-off. He was the most talented player I ever played with.

Jones added: "But he was also a troubled soul. He had a lot of problems off the pitch.

Gazza has since spoken about his struggles with alcoholism and mental health. He has also been declared bankrupt on three occasions.
